Can I use this exercise to relax in any kind of situation?

 

The exercise uses a specific protocol for situations with a shock. For other situations and emotions like tension, anxiety, preoccupation, anger, fears and others specific protocols are required so the exercise works. 

 

Why does this exercise work and what happens in the brain?

 

Without going into details this is what happens: when you remember a moment of shock, the brain activates centres related to alarm reactions. The chosen sentence provides information about the meaning of the emotion (here a shock), which was not available when you lived this situation. By focusing on certain body parts (in our case the hands) which are neurologically dominant and represented very well in the cortex, a massive neutral stimulus is created. Therefore the negative emotions are relativised. The result is a more neutral perspective on the situation. 

 

What can I do if the exercise does not work?

 

In order for the exercise to work, you need to perform the exercise exactly as described, step by step with tranquility. Reserve enough time to do it. For physiologic reasons it is important that you are not thirsty or overly tired.
